SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) — The family of a California college student who vanished nearly three decades ago sued the school on Thursday, alleging it caused Kristin Smart's murder through negligence. Smart, then 19, disappeared from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo on the state’s scenic Central Coast over Memorial Day weekend in 1996. Those students said Flores had stalked and harassed them in the months leading up to Smart's disappearance. Instead, our family has been left to grieve her absence for 27 agonizing years,” a family statement said. The family only realized Cal Poly's alleged negligence after that apology because relatives didn't have any access to the university's investigative file, according to the lawsuit.

Going "car-lite" and cutting nonessential car travel can be an affordable, impactful choice. That may sound expensive, but even a used car in the US now costs about $32,000. Even a brand-new, high-end bike costs about 90% less than the average used car. Public transit costs vary, but one household can save $10,000 a year by using public transportation instead of a car. Smart's research shows that families with a car experience an average income growth of 1% every two years.

About 40% of Smart's clients are in the financial services industry, which is keenly aware of the importance of attracting and maintaining talent. But not all financial services companies are getting it right, Smart said. Smart said most leaders recognize the importance of hiring and talent decisions but aren't dedicating enough time to it. In this challenging economic environment, Freddie Mac has implemented two new initiatives that can help strengthen renters' ability to build credit and achieve homeownership using their history of on-time rent payments. Yet, unlike homeowners who make regular mortgage payments, renters generally do not see their on-time rent payments reflected in their credit scores. Worse yet, the most common way rent payments impact credit scores are when missed rental payments go into collection. After enrollment, the renter's on-time rent payments are reported to the credit bureaus each month. Since Freddie Mac began this initiative last year, 86,000 households across more than 900 multifamily properties have enrolled.

From that point on I rented space at the training gym that I eventually bought from the owner.
